The End 9

I really enjoyed the ending of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.  Many things that I was wondering about or were left unanswered earlier in the book were solved.  For example, Charlie opens up about his Aunt Helen, we discover that Charlie's sister is pregnant, and Brad's father finds out about Patrick.  However, for me, the most important part of the ending is Charlie himself.  When school is over and Sam is about to leave for college, she and Charlie talk about something they have ignored the whole school year - their relationship.  Sam knows that Charlie loves her and was angry about Craig, however he was not honest and never voiced how he felt.  This is so frustrating to Sam, especially since Charlie's dishonesty was what caused him to get in trouble with Mary Elizabeth.  But then Sam tells Charlie she loves him too.  For Charlie, this is what he wanted to hear all year, but he becomes so overwhelmed.  Charlie tell Sam that he has to leave, and she is very understanding.  When Sam and Patrick finally go off to college, Charlie shuts down and stops talking and even moving.  He gets put in the hospital for two months.  In that time, Sam and Patrick visit and write letters, and Charlie is able to really think about his freshman year.  He realizes that it is okay to feel things, and if you want something you deserve to have it.  He learns that it is so important to be honest about his feelings, as being dishonest is one of the worst things that someone can do, both to himself and to others.  The book ends with Charlie's last words, "So, if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they're not, they will be soon enough.  And I will believe the same about you."
